REVIEW: Goop Scalp Scrub + Safer Haircare Tips

Goop scalp scrub, safer beauty

I’ve finally found THE answer to all of our safer haircare prayers, and I’m literally bouncing up and down to share my full review of the Goop G. Tox Himalayan Salt Scalp Scrub Shampoo.

WHOA, that’s certainly a mouthful, but I’ll say that ten times fast over and over again if I never have to live another day without this product. SPOILER ALERT: I LOVE IT.

If you’ve been on the safer personal care product journey, you know that finding a haircare solution that works and doesn’t leave your hair feeling greasy and limp with loads of buildup is like finding a needle in a haystack.

Your girl has tried it ALL. Cheaper brands, LUXURY brands, DIY attempts, I’ve danced naked in the light of the full moon while rubbing a rose quartz all over my head….ok, I haven’t done that last one, but I’m not above it by any means.

So based off my years of wasted dollars and limp strands, here’s what I have to say: Beautycounter Daily Line (Shampoo + Conditioner) PLUS the Goop Scalp Scrub is the holy grail of safer haircare. There I said it, boldly.

There’s no line that gets my hair as clean as Beautycounter’s, but even using their line, over time,

I’ve found that my hair gets greasy QUICKLY in between washes. Granted, not as fast as with other lines, but still. I’ve been eying the Goop G.Tox Scalp Scrub for quite sometime now based off glowing reviews from other safer skincare advocates I know, love and trust, but the price tag has always had me hesitant to pull the trigger.

I finally did it, and I have to say - WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG?!

Goop Scalp Scrub Price

$42 for 6.7 oz of product.

My thoughts on this price are now radically different.

Seeing how much product you actually need, which is about a 1-2 teaspoons depending on how much hair you have, and seeing how big the jar is, this product could last you for months, easily. The directions indicate that you are to use it approximately once a week (I committed to using every Sunday when I do my masks, and my Lemongrass sugar scrubs too).

Goop Scalp Scrub Use

The product is to be used to cleanse the scalp of product, buildup, dirt, and oil…and I can tell you, it does just that!

You’ll want to make sure your hair and scalp is thoroughly wet before applying a small amount directly to your scalp.

I gently massage it throughout, adding in a bit more product if needed to cover my entire scalp.

THIS STUFF SUDS LIKE I’VE NEVER SEEN Y’ALL. It suds so much, that I use the excess foam and massage it into my hair all the way down to the ends.

You then just rinse as normal, and apply your conditioner of choice.

INITIAL THOUGHTS

After the first use I noticed that my hair felt SQUEAKY CLEAN.

A lot of the time, with safer hair care, I always felt like there was a residue or film left behind even after washing thoroughly.

After using the scalp scrub it felt immediately different.

I couldn’t feel any buildup on my scalp, and I also noticed that it felt like my hair dried faster.

LONG TERM THOUGHTS

I plan to use the scalp scrub once a week on Sundays just to keep my scalp clean and happy.

In between, I will continue to wash and condition with the Beautycounter Daily Line maybe twice a week. Here’s what I’ve noticed though so far:

  • I don’t have to wash my hair as often at all. Period. Point blank. I went four days last week without washing OR using dry shampoo and my hair still felt great, so that’s amazing in and of itself.

  • My hair is less greasy

  • Less frizz

  • More volume

  • saving money on my other hair products as I don’t have to use them as frequently

  • There is a strong rose scent just FYI

  • don’t get the scrub in your eyes (trust me)

  • I will forever use this product

SAFER HAIRCARE TIPS + TRICKS

Now that we have the answer to all of our safer haircare wants, here are some quick tips and tricks I’ve learned over the years that work for me and my hair type!

  • Beautycounter Daily Line as my primary shampoo/conditioner

  • You may need to switch up your lines (less frequently now with the scalp scrub) if you notice that your hair stops responding (I like this Acure Organics line and I’ve also heard fabulous things about this one)

  • If you’re highly active, or like to stretch out the time between shampoos, get yourself some dry shampoo, my favorite is the one for dark locks from Primally Pure (use the code JESS10 to get 10% off your first purchase!)

  • When you condition, apply product from the ponytail line down. Sometimes applying conditioner directly to the scalp can result in greasy, limp hair and more product buildup

  • Sleep with a silk pillowcase

  • Use these magical hair ties if you want to keep your bun/pony in place without damaging your hair

I hope this is helpful for you! Trust me, I’ve been there and now that we’ve found our magical unicorn hair product WE ARE NEVER GOING BACK FRIENDS. If you need someone to tell you to go out and get this product, here I am. It’s worth it 100x over. I’d love to hear what your favorite safer haircare product and tips and tricks are too!
